I'll have some spares is a few days and I'd be willing to loan you one
for testing if that'd be helpful.

The vfd display type flows through the 6 output port code path in
MtxOrb_output.  Since I'm using an lcd device, I set the display type
to lcd and hence it flows through the 1 port path, which outputs only
two bytes.  In my case, this causes the display to ignore some
following 0xFE command codes, which is why the Ks (cursor control
commands) are displaying.
