No, 4 lines are required. So 16x4 should work and $LARGEx4 should also
work. But not tested. Of course, more than 4 lines also work, but then
the space is empty. But I'll test it if I find some time, and at least
it should _work_ (i.e. not crash or give weird results).

Yes, I know, not optimal, but lcd-stuff was more a "should work for me
and may be useful for others".
