I experienced those once when I had a slack joint on the connector.  
So double check all your soldering points are okay.
Then (or before), check whether you disabled the speed modes of the  
LPT port in your bios (ECP/EPP). It should be only SPP.

In the LCDd.conf for the Futaba, I set:

[serialVFD]
Type=3
use_parallel=yes
Custom-Characters=0
Port=0x378
