[Lcdproc] xosd driver not working

I've just emerge 0.5.1-r4 in gentoo.  My real hd44780 works, but I can't get 
xosd to work.  When I start LCDd, I get this error:

xosd: xosd_create() failed
Driver [xosd] init failed, return code < 0
Could not load driver xosd
There is no output driver
Critical error while initializing, abort.
