 Yeah, this is something that has been happening for a while. I don't 
 think that it is related with your problem but I commited a fix anyway. 
I updated the nightly tarballs if you want to try it:
http://lcdproc.sourceforge.net/nightly/lcdproc-CVS-stable-0-5-x.tar.gz
 
It works, the warning messages disappeared, thanks.

I made several tests with the curses driver and the problem only occurs with the hd44780 drivers... I'm digging in the direction of a specific hardware problem since my box is a bit special (Lanner 7550 x86 appliance http://www.lannerinc.com/product_detail.php?products_id=160&cPath=85). 

I tried each of the LPT ports, with ou wihtout the "extended mode", none of them works.
