Hi!
I've written another client for lcdproc (yes, tcl again ;):

Description:
    The hostup client pings up to three hosts periodically to see
    wether they are "up" or not. If it can reach the host, the client
    will display the ping-time, if not it will tell you. Useful to
    monitor remote servers or other hosts in your network.
