I've actually been writing a similar project in Python - the idea being an
in-car music player:
http://public.subversion.nexusuk.org/listing.php?repname=projects&path=%2Fplayer%2Ftrunk%2F&rev=0&sc=0#/player/trunk/

ATM it's still very much in development with no documentation and needs a
hacked-up lcdproc, which is available through subversion at
http://public.subversion.nexusuk.org/projects/lcdproc/branches/improve-0.5.0
Unfortunately the hacked lcdproc will currently only work with the
CFontzPacket driver - at some point I'll hopefully make the hacks slightly
nicer and submit the patches back to the lcdproc project.

As with your idea, it uses mpd as the music player.
