The issue is the 4bits interface. Lcdproc reinits the lcd when it's
started, so the lcd gets configured for an 8bits interface.
Just compile lcdproc CVS with that patch and use los-panel
as the ConnectionType (los-panel has the same escape-code for the
commands and uses a 4bits interface).

If you'd like, I can add your interface in the patch as a new
ConnectionType, just make your work public and give it a name ;-).
