C is the appropriate choice for interfacing with the hardware.  For that there
is no doubt.  I just objected to someone saying that perl was messy and
slow and insecure what that is just a product of the Matt Wright school of
programming ;)

C is the most appropriate choice for embedded devices (unless you have a
lot of perl code in the device and use libperl.o)
