Just an idea....
Have you varied the voltage on pin 3 of the LCD ?
This Pin (Vee) sets the contrast of the LCD, if its  low you can't 
see anything on the module.

You have to provide a voltage in the range from 0..5V - easiest way 
with an variable resistor of about 10k.
