[lcdproc] LCDproc, my HD44780 setup, and CPU utilization

Hi,
Today I managed to hack the HD44780 driver in LCDproc so it would
work with my 40x4 LCD that's hooked up to my parallel port with the
8-bit interface. There were two obvious quirks in this setup, but
they're not really problems now. The first, is that it's a 40x4
display (LCDproc is designed for 20x4). Right now it just shows
LCDproc screens in the left half of the display. Does LCDproc do any
40x4 stuff, and how do I use it? (-t 40x4 doesn't work). The second
is the 8-bit interface (whoever wrote the LCDproc HD44780 stuff used
4-bit), but that was an easy work-around.
Now my big problem is CPU usage. LCDd seems to be eating up
40-50% CPU (according to ps aux / top) on my P2-266 system. How can I
fix this? What do I do about it? (long-term, I want to move this
LCDproc setup to a P-100 stand-alone box.)

Thanks,
    Derek Konigsberg
