I was sitting hacking around with an implementation to detect new mail yesterday. What i discovered was the need for a config file. (and hopefully FAST). I'll give you an example. To read the mail stat for 4 users, I need to knoe their username, and also the location of the sppolfiles. Now this isn't a problem at all, but consider the amount of external data needed to be configured : 4 usernames (or less) ...(or maybe even more !) 1 path to the spool files (default is /var/spool/mail) The time between mail checks Link to a data file so people can design their own mail icon .. and more. Here I have 6 configurable variabels. The need of a config file is surely present! Comments are welcome! LCDproc can run without an LCD ... just compile it with some option (I forget which one ... Scott did it ;). To read the mail stat for 4 users, I need to knoe their username, and also the location of the sppolfiles. Now this isn't a problem at all, but consider the amount of external data needed to be configured : 4 usernames (or less) ...(or maybe even more !) 1 path to the spool files (default is /var/spool/mail) The time between mail checks Link to a data file so people can design their own mail icon .. and more. Yes, we're going to add support for a config file very soon. :) There will be probably *less* Makefile options, because we're moving pretty much everything to the config file. (default /etc/lcdproc.cf) By V0.4 or 0.5, there should be support for it. It's currently second priority to further modularizing the code, but it's still high on the todo list. Suggestions? > How will the software be? Some sort of standard interface? Proposals? The authors are busily restructuring the code at the moment so that it will be very easy to add your own code to generate different displays and also to add support for different models of LCD panel (including sizes other than 20x4). Ah. Even with my (limited!) C knowledge I think I could grab some code from powerd and hack something into v0.31 when I have a display. (maybe this week?) They are extended to the holes in the case with those standard cables but I cannot find any diagrams describing the pin-outs in my mess. :-] And when I set both onboard RS232 ports of my cheap pentium motherboard to the same IRQ, will Linux be able to use them both at the same time sharing that IRQ? Do I need an IRQ to be able to transmit data to the display? GW> Support for a config file is also due to be added soon. Cool! GW> The authors are busily restructuring the code at the moment so that it GW> will be very easy to add your own code to generate different displays and GW> also to add support for different models of LCD panel (including sizes GW> other than 20x4). I was just thinking about how to read out the status of the RS232 lines efficiently (CPU-wise). Can this be IRQ-driven, somehow? The simplest way is just a dumb loop that polls the RS232 status through this termios interface and then compares the bits it finds. How can this be one in a better way? Another interesting (?) problem: say I want *severe* syslog messages piped through the lcd device, how is this done best? Just sending messages is no problem, edit syslog.conf and voila! But what about getting things into sync with lcdproc running it's own routine? I was thinking about a special errorlog file which lcdproc checks continuously and - if changed - sends the last line (or so) to the lcd in a controlled manner (blinking, etc). Anybody have any ideas on an alternate way to get power to the >> display? I'd like to have it in a way so that it could be moved to a >> different computer without having to modify the other computer in any >> way. Here is my solution. I spoke with a tech guy at matrix-orbital, and he had some advice. First, let me warn you that he says several people have been blowing there displays up by following the traditional hacking technique of just trying things to see it they work :) For an external box, a couple of things will work safely: 1) get an extention cord for an internal drive power cable and run it out the back of the box. Modify the connector according to the web page. This is not so elegant and requires opening the box 2) The meter supports the addition of a voltage regulator chip. The one that is supported by the LCD displays is the 78M05 I think. Let me check my notes at work to make sure I have the correct ID number. These are kind of hard to find (supposedly you can't just use any 7805 regulator, it need to be 78M05). I have a web site at work I will lookup too. There is a spot on the board where this may be added. Once added, the display can take 7.5-15 VDC instead of 5. Now you can pick up one of these 9V Ac adapter bricks at radio shack or wherever. This method requires soldering. I can make some notes and put together a procedure after I do my own in the next couple days if people want more info. I also recommend talking to matrix-orbital. They were very helpful Some things that probably won't work: 1) If you could find a 5v ac adapter brick (rare to say the least), it probably wouln't work because it wouldn't be exactly 5vdc and it won't be regulated (can you say fried display). 2) getting power from the serial port or parralel port may or may not be regulated. Definitly check first. Find specs somewhere or check with a decent multimeter over time. Some things that might work, but that I know nothing about: 1) stealing power from the keyboard cable. The power to the keyboard may be regulated. You need to find out 1st. All in all, I think the 78M05 method is the best solution, but it requires more work (soldering on a $70 investment). Eek! Don't even try it! Technical reasons: The output logic gates used at the printer port are very good at SINKING current, ie acting as 0 volt wires. They cannout SOURCE very much current at all (ie very bad at being positive). The 'high' voltage level from the parallel port will be about 3.4v at a few milliampes. Not enough to do any thing usefull on its own. You can connect a few spare lines of the parallel port via diodes to a single chip voltage regulator/charge pump to get a stable 5v reference, even with devices drawing current, but again at only a few milliampes at best. This is how software protection dongles and parallel port samplers etc get their supply voltage - but they need very little current!!!!!!!!!! My suggestion with diagram: If you're going to put the LCD device in an external box then use an external power supply. I know it's something else to plug in, a pain at best, but whats the price? You can build a very very very simple (hows your soldering?) circuit to give you +5v, thus: in +-------+ out + 8-16v O----+----| 7805 |----+--------O +5v | +-------+ | === | com === === C1 | === C2 | | | Ov O----+--------+--------+--------O 0v C1 = 0.1uf@16v C2 = 10uf@16v The 8v to 16v input can be from a standard mains adapter, or you can use your own transformer (but *please* only if you know what your doing!) The circuit is very small and can be placed in your LCD project box. A heatsink (small again) might be required for the 7805 voltage regulator (see how hot the 7805 gets) so bare that in mind when fitting inside the box. Sorry the posting is a bit long, but I've seen people blow up their parallel ports by drawing too much current! I believe the 78M05 is a small, three pinned transistor looking device about 5mm along each edge. The LCD circuit board was probably designed with this device in mind. The other 'regular' 7805 voltage regulators are bigger, and have a metal tab onto which a heatsink may be bolted. If you build an external power regulation circuit to give you 5v you can use one of these off-the-shelf voltage regs, and feed the +5v you end up with into the LCD module as though it came from a disk drive power lead. You can order their print catalog from their web site - it's free and arrived at my office barely 3 days after I filled out the web form. I've got all sorts of ideas for custom built flashing light gadgets to tack on to my computer. I suggest using an external 5V power supply + a voltage regulator and, of course, a switch to turn it on and off. -Adam ----------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this list send a blank message to lcdproc-unsubscribe@lists.omnipotent.net From lcdproc-return-48-gareth=omnipotent.net@lists.omnipotent.net Wed Apr 29 15:42:31 1998 Return-Path: Delivered-To: gareth@omnipotent.net Received: (qmail 2027 invoked by uid 1014); 29 Apr 1998 15:42:30 -0000 Mailing-List: contact lcdproc-help@lists.omnipotent.net; run by ezmlm Precedence: bulk Delivered-To: mailing list lcdproc@lists.omnipotent.net Received: (qmail 2020 invoked from network); 29 Apr 1998 15:42:29 -0000 Received: from atlrel2.hp.com (156.153.255.202) by q.omnipotent.net with SMTP; 29 Apr 1998 15:42:29 -0000 Received: from maine.fc.hp.com (maine.fc.hp.com [15.11.163.27]) by atlrel2.hp.com (8.8.6/8.8.5tis) with ESMTP id LAA14868 for ; Wed, 29 Apr 1998 11:47:14 -0400 (EDT) Received: from bobafett.fc.hp.com (bobafett.fc.hp.com [15.11.162.254]) by maine.fc.hp.com with SMTP (8.7.1/8.7.1) id JAA18290
